Recently, the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China took place in Beijing. Throughout the meeting, the document "Recommendations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China for Formulating the 15th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development" was reviewed and approved, outlining the direction for China's development in the coming five years.
The assembly advocated for a continuous expansion of institutional openness, protecting the multilateral trade system, encouraging wider international economic exchanges, and driving reform and growth via openness, thus providing more room for China and the global community to benefit from development opportunities.
In early November, the 8th China International Import Expo (CIIE) took place successfully in Shanghai. As the first major economic and diplomatic event after the Fourth Plenary Session, this year's CIIE not only highlighted the significant potential of the Chinese market but also provided a platform for global partners, such as Nigeria, to network and cooperate.
Nigeria took part in the Expo as the Guest Country of Honor. Throughout the event, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, was present and delivered a speech at the opening ceremony. Chinese Premier Li Qiang had a successful meeting with Hon. Tajudeen Abbas and his group. Building upon these top-level interactions, Nigeria's participation was further emphasized at its national pavilion.
Highlighting the nation's economic successes, investment opportunities, and premium products, the Nigeria Pavilion drew significant interest from Chinese buyers and financial institutions. Nigerian companies utilized this opportunity to directly reach China's large market and boost their brand recognition through interactions with global exhibitors. Major Nigerian exports—such as agricultural goods, processed foods, and creative industry items—remained popular among Chinese consumers, bringing fresh energy to the bilateral economic and trade relationship.
This year, the CIIE enhanced its dedicated exhibition area for goods from the world's least developed countries, most of which are located in Africa. This enhancement allowed businesses and products from all 53 African nations that maintain diplomatic relations with China to fully enjoy zero-tariff benefits. Over 80 business associations from more than 50 countries and regions joined as groups, highlighting the CIIE's special role in supporting global small and medium-sized enterprises. The Hongqiao International Economic Forum, which took place alongside the CIIE, focused for the first time on the themes of 'economic resilience' and 'sustainable agricultural development' in the Global South, further showcasing China's dedication to advancing together with developing countries.
In the last five years, China's economy has experienced consistent growth despite a challenging global situation. By the end of 2025, China's overall economic output is projected to be approximately 140 trillion yuan (around USD 19.4 trillion), accounting for roughly 30 percent of worldwide economic growth. China has kept advancing technological innovation and sustainable development, while also broadening its openness, offering fresh prospects for international collaboration.
Nigeria, as a leading African economy with a youthful population and significant market potential, has experienced rapid progress in its relations with China, guided by the strategic vision of both heads of state. Bilateral trade has increased consistently, exceeding USD 20 billion during the first three quarters of 2025, representing a year-on-year growth of 32.56 percent. China has continued to be one of Nigeria's primary trading partners for many years. The two nations have made substantial collaborative achievements in areas such as energy, agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, and the digital sector, while also seeking new prospects in green development and emerging fields.
The year 2026 will celebrate the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Nigeria. China is prepared to use this occasion to enhance the coordination of development strategies with Nigeria, effectively linking China's 15th Five-Year Plan with Nigeria's 'Renewed Hope' Initiative, broaden practical cooperation in various areas, and assist Nigeria in advancing its industrial and agricultural modernization.
Currently, the global stage is experiencing significant transformations that have not been seen in a hundred years. China's progress is closely linked with the world, and the world also relies on China for growth. Regardless of how the international situation changes, China's resolve to push forward high-level openness will not change; its determination to share development prospects with the rest of the world will remain firm; and its dedication to advancing an open, inclusive, balanced, and mutually beneficial economic globalization will not waver.
China will keep promoting high-level openness, collaborate with Nigeria and other African nations to establish a stronger China-Africa community with a common future, and work together to build a more promising future based on openness, cooperation, and mutual benefit.
