Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PINL), a private security firm responsible for the eastern section of the Trans Niger Pipeline TNP in Rivers, Abia, Imo, and Bayelsa states, has reported an 87% decline in pipeline sabotage incidents when compared to 2022.
As per the company, this accomplishment was facilitated by a rise in the application of community intelligence, which they mentioned grew from 10.5% to 68%, while also revealing that town criers have been introduced to disseminate information quickly within communities, enabling swift responses to mobilize actions against attacks.
Consequently, the movement of goods along the previously vulnerable TNP, which had been closed for several months at one time, has remained consistent in the current period without any delays or product loss, all thanks to zero violations.
Mezeh Akpos, the general manager for Community and Stakeholder Relations at PINL, who informed traditional leaders, chiefs, youth leaders, women, and security agencies, provided further details on the continuous rise in crude oil and gas output in the Eastern Corridor, as well as ongoing peace and stability within the oil and gas communities, attributed to the heightened sense of ownership among residents in pipeline monitoring activities.
He suggested that the key focus areas ahead would include ensuring full pipeline security, keeping all TNP sections under PINL's coverage free from any damage, broadening initiatives like supporting women's business ventures, enhancing technical training for young people, fostering growth in small and medium enterprises, boosting community awareness; and improving information sharing via traditional leaders, youth groups, and local announcers.
Mezeh pointed out that their introduction is already enhancing the exchange of communication among the 215 host communities along the corridor, ultimately aiding PINL's mission to ensure continuous production at the TNP.
He stated that community-driven intelligence, which once made up 10.5 percent of security data, has increased to 68 percent, highlighting what he called a "substantial strengthening of local collaboration and mutual accountability."
Mezeh also shared information about PINL's corporate social responsibility initiatives. He mentioned that 2,000 women who joined the company's SME support program have finished their data entry and account setup procedures and are waiting for the funds to be released by the end of the year. Likewise, the company's scholarship program is now 97 percent done, with recipients anticipated to get their awards before the year ends.
In the future, Mezeh reemphasized PINL's dedication to protecting national assets, enhancing cooperation with governmental bodies, and ensuring openness in all actions. He mentioned that the company will keep focusing on achieving zero violations on the TNP, expand programs aimed at empowering young people and women, and push for the upgrading of essential infrastructure, especially access roads that impact operations throughout the corridor.
Traditional leaders and community figures who attended the meeting praised PINL's method of involving the local population. The King of Ahoada Kingdom, His Majesty Noble Uwoh, called the company's model outstanding, highlighting that its ongoing interaction, clear feedback systems, and empowerment initiatives have encouraged other organizations to adopt similar people-focused strategies.
The Chief Leader of the Owaza Community in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, HM Eze Obioma Nworgu, advocated for more job opportunities for young people and increased assistance for local infrastructure, while encouraging ongoing cooperation to protect the pipeline.
In Eleme, a region that once faced regular acts of vandalism, Mr. Oliver Nwidag, Chairman of the Akpajo Community Development Committee, stated that conditions have significantly improved since PINL took over the task of protecting the pipelines. He mentioned that Eleme, which is home to multiple pipeline lines and manifolds, now experiences a greater sense of stability thanks to increased monitoring and interaction with the local community.
Additionally, the Head of Field Operations for the Eastern Corridor, Project Monitoring Office (PMO) of NNPCL, Engr. Akponine Omojevwe, praised the partnership between PINL and its local communities. He urged continued collaboration, particularly during the Christmas period, which typically brings increased security challenges.
