Mazda men on march in Ryan Motorsport Insurance National Rankings

It’s been another busy weekend in the Ryan Motorsport Insurance National Rankings, with four of the top six in this week’s table making headway.

At the top, Mazda MX-5 Championship dominator Ali Bray continued his unbeaten season with a further two victories at Oulton Park to move onto 14 wins and stretch his advantage to four over his closest opposition.

And behind the leading trio, Matthew Highcock, Rocco Coronel and another MX-5 maestro – in this case MX-5 Cup talisman Ben Short – have all moved up into the top six.

Highcock has been the standard in the BMW 120 Coupe Cup, and his double success at Cadwell Park has moved him onto nine wins for the campaign, just one behind George Line and James Ibbotson, neither of whom raced at the weekend, and up five places to fourth in the Rankings.

Meanwhile, Coronel proved that it’s not all doom and gloom for Dutch Red Bull representatives, the son of versatile racing hero Tom Coronel claiming another brace at Snetterton to join Highcock on nine, and in moving up five positions.

Like Highcock, Short was in action at the 750 Motor Club’s Cadwell weekend. The MX-5 Cup brigade had three races and he won them all, leaping 37 places in the table to sixth.

Another driver to join Short in moving onto eight victories for the 2025 season is Scottish Fiesta ST ace Gerry Hendry, whose double at Knockhill hoists him from 37th to a spot just inside the top 10.

It’s not just MX-5 Mk1 exponents who have made moves in the right direction – Aidan Hills is an established ace in the Mk3 machinery, and his single win at Oulton in the model’s SuperCup moves him up 13 places to 13th. Further north up at Croft, Matt Luff took a pair of successes in the Audi TT Cup to move from near the bottom of our top 50 into a comfortable 17th position.

Another to join the top 20 is Shane Stoney – the Radical Club Challenge was a slightly more modern series in action at the Brands Hatch Historic Superprix and his pair of victories have lifted him from outside the top 50.

All car races in UK and Ireland are included except qualification/repechage, consolation and handicap races. No races in other countries.

Class wins are only counted when there are at least six starters in the class, except: when the race is part of a multi-stage event where six or more have taken part in earlier heats that feed into a semi-final or final; when multiple championships are merged in the same race, the ‘overall’ winner from the slower championship can count a class win as long as that championship has at least 10 starters across all classes.

Only classes divided by car characteristics are included, not those divided by driver characteristics such as ability, professional status, age, experience (for example rookie or pro-am classes).

Each race counts only once, so an overall winner’s class win is not added. Where there is a tie, overall wins take precedence. Where there is still a tie, average grid size for a driver’s wins determines the order.
