Police and labor authorities investigating the fire accident at Anjun Industrial in Daejeon that occurred on the 20th have launched a criminal investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency and the Daejeon Regional Employment and Labor Office conducted a search and seizure on the 23rd, deploying 64 personnel including police and labor inspectors, targeting Anjun Industrial’s headquarters, factory, and the residence of representative Son Joo-hwan. The police plan to verify whether there were illegal expansions and the status of safety management based on the data secured through the search and seizure.
The police also conducted a joint inspection at the fire scene with the Fire Department, the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and the National Forensic Service on the same day. They focused on investigating the production line facilities and structures on the first floor of the factory’s east wing, where the fire is believed to have started, and the gym where nine of the 14 deceased were found. The police investigation team summoned about 20 factory officials as witnesses for questioning up to that day.
Labor authorities have booked and are investigating Son Joo-hwan, representative of Anjun Industrial, on charges of violating the Serious Accidents Punishment Act and the Industrial Safety and Health Act. Labor authorities summoned Son on the same day and conducted a face-to-face investigation for about five hours. The police are likely to apply for a bench warrant for Son and other company officials.
In relation to the fire at the Aricell lithium battery factory in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, which resulted in 23 deaths in June 2024, the company’s representative was indicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison in the first trial in September of last year. This was the heaviest sentence since the introduction of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act. The Suwon District Court, the first trial court, cited insufficient fire evacuation training and emergency exits as reasons for the guilty verdict.
Meanwhile, the police confirmed the identities of 13 out of the 14 deceased from the Anjun Industrial fire on the same day. They plan to conduct further detailed examinations for the remaining one person.
A joint memorial altar for the fire victims, set up on the first floor of Daejeon City Hall on the morning of the same day, continued to receive condolence visits. A bereaved family member (a 50-year-old woman), supported by her family, visited the memorial altar and, upon seeing her son’s memorial tablet on the altar, stared blankly and wailed, “Why are you here? How scared must you have been? What should I do?”
The bereaved families of the Aricell factory fire tragedy also visited the joint memorial altar on the same day. They met with the bereaved families of the Anjun Industrial victims and offered comfort, saying, “As we were in similar situations, we will stand in solidarity with you.” Kim Mi-suk, who lost her son, the late Kim Yong-kyun, in an industrial accident at the Taean Thermal Power Plant in 2018, also visited the memorial altar. Kim said, “It seems that no matter how much we emphasize safety in our country, the reality does not change.”
Daejeon’s Daedeok District decided to cancel the “Daedeok Water Light Festival,” focusing administrative efforts on supporting the fire victims. The festival was scheduled to take place from the 4th to the 18th of next month in the Daecheong Park area.
