Support security agencies to curb banditry, Oyo CP urges residents
Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, Olugbenga Abimbola, on Monday called on residents to support security agencies with timely and credible information in order to curb kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities.
CP Abimbola made the call in Ibadan at the commencement of activities to mark the National Police Week.
The activities to kickstart the Week included environmental sanitation exercise at Challenge Terminal Motor Park area and free medical outreach at Aleshinloye Market car park, with over 100 people benefiting from health screening and treatment.
Participants in the sanitation exercise included senior police officers and rank and file, as well as members of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC).
CP Abimbola, who also participated in the sanitation exercise by using a shovel to remove weeds, said that the exercise is to encourage a police-community partnership in order to build trust.
According to CP Abimbola, “if the public does not engage with us, they cannot rely on us,” adding that effective policing and the fight against crime, particularly kidnapping, require strong collaboration between the police and the public.
He stated that the move to achieve sustainable security would require building trust through community engagement.
Saying that economic growth could only thrive best in a peaceful environment, the police boss reiterated his commitment to ensuring a safe and secure state where residents could carry out their daily activities without fear.
He said: “I want my tenure to be crime-free and safe. But we cannot do it alone. We must collaborate with the public. They give us information, and we act on it promptly. That is how we will achieve results.”
The Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Mrs. Adegbenjo Esther, in her remarks, urged residents to help in securing the safety of their communities by giving useful information to security agencies.
She noted that members of the public are often aware of suspicious movements and criminal elements within their neighborhoods and should not hesitate to report them.
“We know ourselves and those who are criminals among us. The public should give correct and prompt information. If you cannot approach the police directly, you can reach out to PCRC members, and we will relay the information appropriately,” she said.
The Director of Police Medical Services in Oyo State, Dr Olayemi Kazeem, who spoke with journalists, expressed joy that the exercise recorded a high turnout, with many beneficiaries diagnosed and treated for various health conditions.
Among the common ailments detected, according to Dr Kazeem, were high blood pressure and elevated blood sugar levels, with some residents learning about their conditions for the first time.
“We have seen people with hypertension and diabetes. Some were unaware, while others had defaulted on their medications. We have advised them accordingly and provided necessary drugs free of charge,” he stated.
Olayemi added that all services, including consultation, screening, and medication were provided at no cost, while patients requiring further attention were referred to police medical facilities for continued care.
Commending the police for combining security advocacy with humanitarian services, beneficiaries of the initiative described the effort as a step towards establishing trust and cooperation between law enforcement agents and the public.
