US miner wins big deal to exploit Congo’s largest lithium mine

US miner wins big deal to exploit Congo’s largest lithium mineThe Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has signed a deal with KoBold Metals, an American miner backed by billionaires Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos, for large-scale mineral exploration in the country.

The agreement announced in Kinshasa on Friday—signed by Congolese Minister of Mines Kizito Pakabomba and KoBold DRC Managing Director Benjamin Katabuka, and witnessed by President Félix Tshisekedi and United States Ambassador to the DRC Lucy Tamlyn—spells out a strategic partnership that paves the way for further American investments in Congo’s mining sector.

The deal provides for free public access to historic geoscientific data through the National Geological Service of Congo (SGNC) for the benefit of all, and permits KoBold Metals to use “advanced technology to find deposits of critical minerals that will be developed into world-class mines."It allows KoBold to buy and develop the Roche Dure lithium deposit located in Manono in south-eastern DRC.

Roche Dure is one of the world’s largest hard-rock lithium deposits.

Earlier this year, there were reports that Kinshasa was in talks with UK global mining firm Rio Tinto.

Disputes have delayed development of the mine, and the government expects KoBold Metals to resolve them with the people.“The terms of the partnership between the Democratic Republic of Congo and KoBold Metals to develop this new mine will be the subject of discussions between KoBold Metals, the Congolese government's Ministries of Mines and Portfolio, and (mining firm) Cominière," the document says.

KoBold is expected to deploy a team to the DRC geological records at the Royal Museum of Central Africa to begin digitising records and apply for exploration licences covering over 1,600 square kilometres of exploration ground before July 31, 2025.

In April 2025, President Tshisikedi received KoBold Metals CEO Kurt House in Kinshasa to discuss the company’sproposals to digitise DRC’s geoscientific data, explore the for undiscovered mineral deposits, and develop the mines.

Kinshasa has indicated a desire to attract more US private sector investment, specifically in the critical minerals sector, and a comprehensive agreement between the DRC and US on mining is in the works.

Already, the Trump administration sponsored negotiations between Rwanda and the DRC on the one hand, leading to a peace deal signed in Washington on June 27, and the DRC and the M23/AFC on the other, with talks ongoing in Doha, Qatar.

KoBold’s Katabuka said that this week’s agreement is part of the cooperation between the United States and the DRC for peace and prosperity.“We hope that this door opened by the Congolese government for American investment will lead to further US investment in the DRC,” he said.“The economic partnership between the United States and the DRC promises sustainable growth, innovation, and tangible benefits for Congolese communities,” said Ambassador Tamlyn.
