Anambra 2025: Someone has been procured to distract us but refuse to accept that-Moghalu, LP candidate

Gloria Anaeze
The governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the November 8 election in Anambra State, Chief Dr George Moghalu has dismissed as a non issue the report that court has restrained him from parading himself as a candidate of the LP.
Dr Moghalu during an interview with him at his home in Nnewi, weekend, said it was the handiwork of his opposition to cause distraction.
According to him, it sounded funny, adding that the man who was acting the script had no locus.
He disclosed that it was a situation where someone was procured to go to court and make series of demands against his candidacy including that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) should not recognize him and other issues.
He said that court declined all the demands except the substituted service which he noted was nothing to worry about. He explained that while granting the substituted service the court demanded that the respondents should be placed on notice as the case was adjourned till further hearing.
“How they came about that I have been restrained sounded funny. But let me use this opportunity to explain a few things. The man who is acting out this script has no locus. He was not an aspirant, not a candidate, did not participate in the primary, doing all that without recourse to Supreme Court judgement.
“The Supreme Court judgement also has ruled that you have fourteen days after the primary has taken place for you to go to court and challenge the process. But this man waited for over two and half to three months. That goes to tell you that he was procured to do a hatchet job.
“The issues of primary are not the responsibility of any State in all the parties. It is an assignment conducted by the national leadership of the political parties.
“On what basis is he claiming to be the State Chairman of an interim caretaker committee of the LP in Anambra State? On what basis, if not to cause mischief and distraction. But we as a team, George Moghalu’s Campaign Organization has refused to accept that distraction.
“We’re busy reaching out to Ndị Anambra for them to look at us favourably on November 8. But like I said, he has the right to go to court.
“Somebody may decide to sue David because he has gray hair. It is about him going to court to prove to the court why you shouldn’t have gray, whether you imported it.
“So, as for me, I don’t see it as any issue because if I talk about it, it is elevating a charlatan to a level he does not belong to.
“A few days ago, he said my people were threatening to kill him. This is somebody seeking relevance and he must bring Moghalu into it. That’s why I refuse to comment on it. I shouldn’t degenerate into that level. Is it because we’re contesting election?” he concluded.
On campaign of calumny engaged in by someone other contestants of the November 8 governorship election, Dr Moghalu described it as embarrassing.
He regretted that rather than engage in issue based campaign, including offering solutions to prevailing insecurity in the state, politicians preferred toeing the path of incivility and casting aspersions on others.
Moghalu said such mundane issues as certificate and infidelity were too infantile to constitute distractions to weightier issues bedeviling the State.
He said: “It’s quite embarrassing what we politicians engage in. We shouldn’t belittle ourselves getting involved in mundane and personal issues and casting aspersions with foul language.
“I believe campaign should be conducted in an orderly and civil manner. There are more contending issues in our polity to talk about. Talking about sex issues and certificates is lowering the bar.
“We should concentrate on what we’re going to offer the people especially as November 8 election approaches.
“If we see things not working well in government, it behoves on us to draw the attention of the citizenry to those shortcomings and profer solutions.
“What should engage us is to market ourselves and how we intend to alleviate their burden and contribute in making the State better by changing the narratives.
“We must concentrate on delivering our promises, seeking their consent and entering into contracts and agreement with the electorate.
“The government in power hasn’t done enough as far as I’m concerned. That’s why we’re in the race to offer alternatives.
“For example, during the time of Peter Obi, Anambra has never missed first or second position in education. Same Obi distributed buses and computers to schools.
“But currently, we’re talking about twenty and above position. It’s scandalous. These are the things I expect should engage us as politicians. Our health systems, infrastructure, erosion, things that touch lives of people.
“I’ve intended not to talk about this but due to several calls I’ve been received from people who insisted my views must be heard. I plead with my colleagues to be civil. Let’s face this campaign with credibility and character.
“It’ll be most unfortunate to reason that the only way to distract people from real issues of insecurity is by these mundane things.
“Issue of insecurity is the talk of the moment and there’s nothing you can do to distract the people from that. The reality is that the state is insecure and that something drastic has to be done.
“Otherwise, we get ourselves consumed. No matter new information you bring, no matter the distractions, the fact remains people are being killed regularly.
Moghalu reiterated that addressing insecurity would be among the priority actions if elected governor of the state.
“In my 12 point agenda, insecurity is top priority. We can change the narratives by taking it from various perspectives, including through kinetic and non-kinetic.
“We’ll tackle issues of unemployment which is producing a bank of criminals in the state,” he added.
