Executives at a bus company are facing criticism for devising a timetable that has been labelled a "farcical" one, offering rural passengers a mere five minutes in town before the final bus departs for home.

The recently implemented schedule for travel between Glentrool and Newton Stewart in Dumfriesshire, a change made by Dumfries and Galloway Council, has caused significant disruption for frequent commuters.

1. The initial bus departing the village on Saturdays and during school holidays on weekdays arrives in Newton Stewart at 11:30 a.m. However, the final return bus departs a mere five minutes afterward at 11:35 a.m., leaving no further service for the remainder of the day.

Joseph Bowman, the proprietor of Galloway Forest Holiday Park located just outside the village, commented: "This is unfavorable. Numerous elderly residents depend on the bus system to attend medical visits and purchase necessities; it represents their sole means of transportation."

However, it's not only impacting older individuals; businesses are also feeling the consequences. We've experienced cancellations... approximately 20 to 25 individuals have indicated they are unable to attend due to the alteration of the bus route.

He mentioned that tourists visiting the park and relying on the bus to get around, especially stargazers who frequent the village visitor center in Europe's original International Dark Sky Park, have been forced to spend money on taxis.

Local resident Andy Smith stated that it was also negatively affecting the community's social dynamics.

He further stated: "A significant issue is the detrimental impact on attending medical, dental, and hospital visits. However, when combined with the difficulty in socializing, this is fostering an increasing sense of detachment, solitude, and worry about what lies ahead for rural areas."

Finlay Carson, a Scottish Conservative MSP representing Galloway and West Dumfries, described the situation as "farcical," warning that it would have "serious consequences" for numerous Glentrool residents who depend on the affected services.

He further stated: "Everyone who contributed to this revised schedule needs to meet immediately and collaboratively develop a solution that prevents this community from essentially losing its bus service."

The change comes just months after Stagecoach confirmed it had taken the ‘difficult decision’ to close two sites in the region.

The city council had stated earlier that the majority of services would be maintained by different providers after a bidding process.

However, Dumfries and Galloway Council and the SWestrans transport partnership told the BBC that without the council intervening as a "last resort operator," this area of the region "risked losing all transportation services."

The company also stated that the schedule was introduced due to a lack of passengers, but they are collecting input as they endeavor to 'refine the network'.
