Raila Odinga: James Orengo’s wife spotted in tears at ODM leader’s Bondo as burial plans commence
The emotional impact of Raila Odinga's passing continues to resonate deeply across Kenya, with poignant scenes emerging from his Bondo home following the announcement of his death. A particularly touching moment involved Betty Orengo, wife of Siaya Governor James Orengo, who was visibly moved upon hearing the news delivered by Oburu Oginga, Raila's brother.

Oburu arrived at the Odinga homestead via helicopter shortly after 4 PM on Thursday, October 16th. In accordance with Luo tradition, a family member must formally announce the death to those at home before funeral arrangements can proceed. During the televised announcement, Oburu revealed that, in accordance with his wishes, Raila would be laid to rest next to his parents.
Betty Orengo, dressed in a vibrant kitenge, stood beside Oburu during the announcement, her grief evident as she wiped away tears. She later offered a heartfelt tribute to Raila, acknowledging the irreplaceable void his passing leaves behind.
"This is the man who sacrificed his personal liberty and family relationships to fight for Kenya," she stated. "My relationship with him, his beloved wife, and their family has been defined by struggle, particularly the struggle for a better Kenya... he is irreplaceable. We will learn and continue in the lessons that he taught us."
When asked about her last conversation with Raila, Betty Orengo shared that it revolved around the Siaya International Trade and Investment Conference (SITICO 2025), which was scheduled to commence on the very day of his passing, October 16th. "That is what we spoke about last, and he was interested in the role that I was playing in the conference," she revealed.
She further elaborated on her frequent conversations with Raila, emphasizing the many memorable aspects of his character. "He was full of love. He was a loving and kind person, and he expressed that in so many ways. For example, if you were bereaved, he would be the first person to call you. His love and sacrifice for Kenyans tended to overshadow how much he also loved his friends. It is painful," she expressed with deep emotion.
James Orengo's Response
Siaya Governor James Orengo, a long-time ally of Raila Odinga, had maintained a relatively low profile in recent times. He was first seen in public on Wednesday, October 15th, at Raila's home, marking his first public appearance there in quite some time.
Orengo was also present at Kasarani Stadium on Thursday, October 16th, to view the body of Raila Odinga, who passed away in India. Dressed in a blue and white African print shirt and black trousers, Orengo joined other dignitaries in paying their respects at the VIP lounge.
Orengo delivered a moving tribute to Raila, lauding him as a statesman whose legacy would endure. "Words fail me to express the shock, deep sorrow, and immeasurable grief at the news of the untimely passing of my brother, my friend, my party leader, a statesman, and a towering figure of Kenya’s second liberation, and the driving force behind the realization of the 2010 Constitution," he stated.
The Siaya Governor also announced the postponement of the SITICO 2025 conference and other county events as a mark of respect, allowing the residents of Siaya to mourn the loss of Raila.
