Belgium Ambassador, Peiter Leenknegt, Parleys Olubadan On Economic Growth

Mr. Peiter Leenknegt, the Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, recently engaged with the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, to discuss strengthening bilateral economic relations between Belgium and the historic city of Ibadan.
During a courtesy visit to Oba Ladoja at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan, the ambassador commended the Nigerian government's policy shift from a reliance on the oil and gas sector towards agriculture. He highlighted the increasing significance of cocoa in international markets, noting its growing prominence as a key export from Nigeria to Belgium.
"Since 2024, cocoa has surpassed crude oil as the primary export product from Nigeria to Belgium," the ambassador stated. "Consequently, the price of cocoa has risen, which is beneficial for farmers as it improves their livelihoods. This also demonstrates the diversification of our commercial relations."
Oba Ladoja, in his address, emphasized his commitment to protecting all residents of Ibadan, regardless of their tribal, religious, or political affiliations.
"My ascension to the throne of Ibadanland is divinely ordained," Oba Ladoja explained. "The selection of the Olubadan is not determined by the Ifa oracle or by wealth, but by the longevity granted by God."
He further acknowledged the evolving role of traditional rulers in contemporary society. "I am pleased that the Ambassador recognizes that the role of the Kabiyesi today differs from what it was 50 years ago," he said. "People increasingly look to us for support. One of our primary responsibilities as Olubadan is to ensure peace in Ibadanland, which is something we are actively working towards."
Oba Ladoja stressed the importance of addressing socio-economic issues to maintain peace and stability. "We cannot discuss peace without addressing the fundamental needs of the people," he asserted. "We must find ways to engage our youth and provide them with opportunities. By keeping them occupied and well-cared for, we can combat the growing problem of drug addiction that threatens the foundation of Ibadanland."
The Olubadan expressed his gratitude to the Belgian government for its partnership and collaboration with Ibadanland, emphasizing the city's abundant farmland suitable for agricultural development.
"I appreciate the intellectual and financial capacity of Belgium," he said. "The Ambassador has assured me of their support whenever we seek assistance."
Oba Ladoja highlighted Ibadan's historical significance and its potential for further growth. "Ibadan has always been a vital center for the Yoruba people," he noted. "We possess our own mineral resources and vast agricultural land, suitable for both grazing and forestry. This distinguishes Ibadan from many other places."
He also expressed his intention to leverage the platform introduced by the Ambassador. "The Ambassador mentioned a committee of French-speaking Ambassadors in Nigeria," Oba Ladoja explained. "We will discuss this further, and I would be delighted to host them in Ibadan soon. Together, we can develop plans to transform Ibadan, not only building on our historical achievements but also ensuring continued progress so that we maintain our position as a pacesetter."
In a related development, Oba Ladoja urged traditional rulers to set a positive example to uphold the integrity of the traditional institution.
He made this call while receiving the Olofi Isheri Olofin of Lagos, Oba Ibrahim Bello, at the Olubadan Palace in Oke-Aremo, Ibadan. This underscores Oba Ladoja's commitment to strengthening relationships with other traditional leaders and promoting good governance within the traditional sphere.
