100,000 Flee El Fasher as Sudan Conflict Intensifies
Several individuals who left El Fasher due to the continuous conflict are currently residing in a camp located in Tawila, Sudan, as of November 20, 2025.

Sudan is still dealing with a critical humanitarian situation, with conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) causing one of the biggest displacement problems globally.

The fighting, which started in April 2023, has forced over 12 million individuals to leave their homes, as reported by aid organizations, with 8.8 million people displaced within the country and 3.5 million seeking refuge elsewhere.

Humanitarian organizations indicate extensive hardship caused by food shortages, illness, and continuous conflict.

The Head of Operations for the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in Sudan, Noah Taylor, stated that at least 100,000 individuals have left El Fasher and nearby villages since October 26. He noted that only approximately 10,000 have managed to arrive in Tawila up to now.

In a statement shared with newsrooms on Thursday, Taylor mentioned that many of the newly displaced are reaching Tawila "exhausted, dehydrated, hungry, and requiring urgent assistance," while tens of thousands of others remain unlocated.

"Tawila has expanded into a large community, with thousands of additional families continuing to arrive every day. Many are looking for lost relatives following the turmoil," he stated.

By November 19, 2025, Taylor mentioned that Tawila had accommodated almost 379,000 individuals escaping violence from Zamzam Camp and El Fasher, where humanitarian organizations have indicated severe food shortages.

He observed that the town was never planned to accommodate such a high population, leading to an increasingly deteriorating humanitarian crisis.

"As you reach the top of the last hill near Tawila, you glimpse what appears to be a temporary city emerging from the desert," he said.

When I visited in May, Tawila's camps were home to over 200,000 individuals. Now, it has grown into a larger settlement accommodating even more displaced families.

Taylor mentioned that he had recently come back from Tawila prior to making the statement.

Families are arriving tired and hungry, with many trying to find relatives they lost during the violence," he said. "I spoke to a man who had traveled for 18 days from Al Fasher using one crutch after being injured. Such stories are frequent.

He mentioned that those escaping the area had experienced "months of siege, intense combat, and the breakdown of essential services" in Al Fasher.

As per Taylor, numerous families in Tawila continue to build temporary shelters using simple items like blankets and branches. The NRC estimates that at least 5,000 families reside in makeshift buildings on the edges of the settlement.

"we are already witnessing a rise in health risks," he stated.

Access to water, sanitation, and shelter facilities is struggling to meet the growing number of arrivals. Without a significant increase in assistance, situations are expected to worsen rapidly.

The NRC states that it is assisting local authorities, increasing educational and psychological support for children, managing the camp, and enrolling new families for financial aid.

Over 2,000 children are presently participating in NRC's emergency education and Improved Learning Initiative.

Taylor cautioned that without secure humanitarian access and additional financial support, the circumstances could deteriorate.

Families still come together at collection centers every day in search of shelter supplies, blankets for chilly evenings, and enrollment for food aid.

Relief organizations also note that thousands of individuals are still located outside Tawila in regions under the control of militant groups, where movement is restricted and availability of aid is scarce.

NRC teams report that they have documented over 10,000 new arrivals in Tawila, offered financial support to approximately 2,000 families, and enrolled more than 2,000 children in emergency education and psychological support programs.

"We are also assisting local responders through water transportation, food distribution, community kitchens, and camp management as demands increase significantly," Taylor stated.

According to humanitarian groups, as many as one million individuals could currently be residing in and near Tawila, where women and children constitute a large portion of the population.

Reports suggest that there is restricted availability of clean water, sanitation facilities, and shelter, with just a small percentage of inhabitants consistently able to access water and toilets.
