The Africa Trade Engine (ATE), a pioneering collaboration between TRT Manufacturing and TradeDepot, has officially begun—marking the start of a new chapter in Africa's industrial and trade self-reliance.

ATE serves as a private-sector initiative for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), aiming to boost trade and employment opportunities. It helps global and African brands manufacture in Africa and access local markets more efficiently and dependably.

Transforming Trade Theory into Practical Trade

Constructed by African hands and driven by African innovation, ATE turns trade theory into practical trade — demonstrating that Africa is capable of manufacturing competitively, distributing effectively, and growing in an inclusive manner.

ATE merges TRT Manufacturing's experience in product development, production, quality control, export packaging, and facility management with TradeDepot's online distribution system, market reach, and trade data analysis.

They open up a continent-wide manufacturing and logistics network that connects regional production centers spanning from South Africa to Benin, along with operational distribution sites in Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya.

Reforming Africa's Economic and Environmental Prospects

"Africa's move from relying on imports to producing locally is more than an economic necessity — it's a key factor in generating employment and addressing climate challenges," said Kachi Izukanne, co-founder of TradeDepot and CEO of ATE.

It focuses on boosting youth employment and leveraging Africa's young population, with a median age of 19.7 years, along with the patterns of urban growth and increasing consumer needs.

Every facility will develop technical knowledge and enhance local ways of life.

"We are building supply chain resilience through localized production networks, guaranteeing uninterrupted operations during global disruptions," states Izukanne.

The ATE model also provides substantial momentum to AfCFTA, which includes 54 signatories, 1.4 billion people, and a US$3.4 trillion economic zone, creating vast opportunities and long-term development.

By producing key FMCG items — such as household and personal care goods — locally, ATE tackles an approximate US $50 billion yearly import deficit and opens up fresh trade routes within Africa.

ATE's decentralized manufacturing and packaging facilities were designed as a direct reaction to the supply chain challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, guaranteeing that Africa will not face disruptions again.

Local manufacturing also reduces emissions from long-distance transportation and aids in achieving national goals for lowering carbon emissions.

"Every kilometer saved in shipping represents a measurable carbon benefit. Each facility helps maintain livelihoods, stabilize families, and transfer skills within the local community. Manufacturing locally is a form of migration policy — dignity and jobs rooted in local economies," says Izukanne.

ATE's model will also create tangible and quick results in the data and technology areas through:

"The Localization Index will function as an accountability system that tracks how multinational and local brands adapt their manufacturing, procurement, and distribution processes. This will introduce a new ESG indicator, providing investors and governments with a clear view of which products are genuinely 'Made in Africa,'" says Izukanne.

The collaboration between TRT Manufacturing and TradeDepot highlights ATE's mission: combining technical expertise with online marketplace opportunities.
