The UK's national broadcasting organization has expressed regret over the way it edited a documentary concerning the US president's speech on January 6. However, the BBC has dismissed Trump's allegations of defamation.

The BBC has issued an apology to US President Donald Trump regarding a misleading alteration in a "Panorama" documentary, according to the British public broadcaster on Thursday, although it has rejected the claim that this situation constitutes a basis for a defamation lawsuit.

Trump has warned of initiating legal actionA media organization paid $1 billion (approximately €860 million) for deceiving audiences regarding a speech he delivered to his followers in Washington, DC on January 6, 2021, just before Congress was set to confirm Joe Biden's 2020 election win.

The program combined two segments from one of Trump's speeches that were over 50 minutes apart, giving the appearance that he was inciting theCapitol riot.

The film, aired just days ahead of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, also cut a part in which Trump expressed his desire for supporters to protest in a peaceful manner.

The dispute has already resulted in several resignationsof BBC Director General Tim Davie and Chief Executive of News Deborah Turness.

What did the BBC mention in its letter addressed to Trump?

In a statement released on Thursday, the BBC mentioned that its chairman, Samir Shah, has "written a personal letter to the White House, expressing to President Trump that he and the organization regret the alteration of the president's speech on January 6, 2021."

"The statement further noted that there is no foundation for a defamation claim,".

In a statement released Thursday night, the BBC acknowledged that the edit "unintentionally suggested that we were presenting a single, uninterrupted part of the speech, instead of highlighting parts from various sections, leading to the incorrect assumption that President Trump had directly urged violent action."

It stated that the show would "not be aired again in this format on any BBC channels."

What did the BBC report regarding Trump's defamation legal case?

In the correspondence, the BBC details the grounds on which it does not consider Trump's defamation claims to be applicable.

It stated that it did not air the "Panorama" episode on its US channels, and it also did not possess the rights to do so.

The BBC also rejected the claim that the edit was performed with intent to deceive viewers, stating it was done to condense a long speech.

It also contended that the documentary did not harm Trump, as the U.S. president asserts, since he was eventually re-elected.

The BBC also noted that the clip was not meant to be watched alone, and was included in a one-hour program featuring various viewpoints that backed Trump.

Trump has focused on various other well-known media outletsfacing significant legal actions due to what he perceives as biased reporting, including television networks like CNN, ABC, and CBS, along with the companies that own themThe New York Times and Wall Street Journal.

What new allegations is the BBC encountering?

The BBC's correction occurred as the organization encountered new accusations that another show, "Newsnight," which aired two years prior to the "Panorama" episode, had manipulated Trump's January 6 speech in a comparable deceptive manner.

In the "Newsnight" episode aired in June 2022, Trump's speech was altered to suggest that he directly encouraged his followers to riot and prevent Congress from confirming Biden's victory.

Replying to the most recent assertions, which were covered by a podcast associated with the British newspaperThe Daily Telegraph, the BBC stated it "adheres to the highest editorial standards" and is "investigating" the issue.
