Kia has launched its specialized factory for Purpose Built Vehicles (PBV), named the 'EVO Plant,' which it sees as a key factor in driving growth within the future mobility sector. On the 14th, Kia conducted a completion ceremony for the East Building and a groundbreaking event for the West Building of the EVO Plant at AutoLand Hwaseong in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, revealing its PBV production center, with a total investment of 4 trillion South Korean won. The EVO Plant marks Kia's second dedicated electric vehicle factory and its first facility exclusively for PBVs. The name 'EVO Plant' merges 'Evolution,' symbolizing progress, with 'Plant,' referring to a factory.

Covering 300,000 square meters (about 90,000 pyeong) inside the Hwaseong complex, the EVO Plant will manufacture modular electric vehicles that can be tailored to meet the specific needs and industries of customers, allowing modifications to seats, interior layouts, doors, and cargo areas. For those often transporting wheelchairs, the second-row seats can be taken out to make room for wheelchair access, while delivery companies can convert seats into storage spaces.

◇Kia Focuses on Light Commercial Vehicles

Kia is set to construct two specialized factories for PBV vehicles, creating a manufacturing center with an annual production capacity of 250,000 units. The East Building, which was finished today, has a capacity of 100,000 units and will manufacture the 'PV5,' Kia's inaugural PBV model introduced this year. The West Building is expected to start producing large PBV models in 2027, with an annual output of around 150,000 units.

Song Ho-seong, President of Kia, stated during the completion and groundbreaking ceremonies, "Out of the 4.51 million electric vehicles Kia intends to deliver to the global market from 2026 to 2030, 58%, which amounts to 2.63 million units, will be manufactured locally to help enhance the country's industrial competitiveness."

The EVO Plant is a smart factory inspired by Korean technology, incorporating Hyundai Motor and Kia's advanced smart factory systems. On the conveyor belt of the East Building, large robotic arms smoothly lifted and placed heavy components into the vehicle dashboard before fastening them. Kia stated, "AI-powered robotic arms can independently identify positions and carry out movement and tightening tasks, improving efficiency while reducing musculoskeletal injuries and significant accidents among employees."

◇Intelligent Manufacturing Plant Combining Artificial Intelligence and Self-Driving Vehicles

The body assembly procedure utilizes a smart logistics system that employs autonomous guided vehicles to reduce the need for forklifts and tuggers inside the factory. The painting process has implemented technology that lowers carbon and harmful emissions by 20%. The assembly process integrates conveyor lines with a cell-based production system, allowing the simultaneous production of different vehicle models. This enables the manufacturing of various PBVs with distinct purposes, specifications, and interior setups on the same line. A 'Conversion Center,' an essential facility that sets PBVs apart from regular passenger vehicles, will also be created. Spanning 63,728 square meters, this center is a specialized post-processing facility that will manufacture derived models such as campers, specialty vehicles, and box trucks based on the PV5 platform.

The market for passenger electric vehicles is experiencing fierce competition from Chinese manufacturers known for their cost-effective offerings. On the other hand, the PBV market is still largely unexplored, with no dominant global player. The EVO Plant serves as Kia’s initial platform to gain an early advantage in this emerging sector. On the same day, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources unveiled its 'K-Mobility Global Leadership Strategy,' promising backing for the industry. This initiative includes raising electric vehicle subsidies next year and launching a new 'Electric Vehicle Transition Support Fund' that offers up to 1 million Korean won to individuals who trade in their old vehicles for electric ones. Furthermore, a 50 billion Korean won 'Future Vehicle Industry Technology Innovation Fund' will be established to assist traditional internal combustion engine part manufacturers in shifting towards future vehicle components.
