China did not promise to protect or provide Nigeria with 'advanced weapons' after US president Trump's assertions about a 'Christian genocide'

IN SHORT:Some Facebook posts state that China has advised the US to refrain from interfering in Nigeria's matters and has pledged to protect the West African nation and provide it with arms. However, this is false. China only expressed support for Nigeria's right to determine its own development route; it did not promise to defend or supply weapons to the country.

On October 31, 2025, the president of the United StatesDonald Trump saidChristianity was encountering a critical challenge in Nigeria andclassifiedreferred to it as "a country of particular concern".

Days later, he threatenedto deploy the US military "firing on all cylinders" to Nigeria in order to eliminate what he referred to as the "Islamic Terrorists" who were supposedly killing Christians.

As a reply, Nigerian president Bola Tinubu issued a statement,sayingThe portrayal of Nigeria as religiously intolerant does not represent our country's true situation, nor does it acknowledge the ongoing and genuine efforts of the government to protect the freedom of religion and beliefs for every Nigerian.

In this regard, various social media entriesclaimThat China has cautioned the US against interfering in Nigeria's matters and pledged to protect the West African nation from any actions taken by Trump.

It also claimsChina has issued a caution to the United States, urging Washington to refrain from interfering in Nigeria's domestic matters following former President Donald Trump's threat of military intervention regarding claims of Christian persecution.

The post features a link and prompts users to click it to "read more" regarding the statement credited to China.

While there have been reportsattacks on Christians andother religious groupsIn Nigeria, Trump has not offered any evidence to support his assertions.

China and Nigeriamaintain a longstanding diplomatic and economic connection, along with certain military collaboration.

China and the United States are considered major world powers with enduring influenceeconomic ties, but it is oftenpolitical tension between the two.

But did China pledge to protect Nigeria and provide it with arms to combat the US? We investigated.

Misleading claim

Africa Check uncovered no reliable media sources indicating that the Chinese government stated it would protect Nigeria and provide it with arms to combat the US.

Rather, we discovered a message on theX handleat the Chinese embassy in Nigeria, which cited a spokesperson from China's foreign ministry,Mao Ning, answering questions during a routine press conference inBeijing, China's capital.

When questioned regarding Trump's remarks about the reported killing of Christians in Nigeria, shesaid:

As a full-service strategic ally of Nigeria, China strongly backs the Nigerian government in guiding its people toward a development route that aligns with Nigeria's unique national circumstances. We reject any nation's involvement in other countries' domestic matters under the guise of religion and human rights. We also stand against the reckless imposition of sanctions and the application of force.

No further comment was issued by the Chinese government or any information regarding the defense of Nigeria or providing it with weapons.

The link associated with the posts also fails to direct users to a genuine report containing further details about the claim. This is a cause for concern.

Although China urged the US to stay out of Nigeria's domestic matters, it did not state that it would support or provide Nigeria with "advanced weapons" to confront the US.
