Defence Minister Vows to Shield Officers on Legal Assignments
The Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has emphasized the Federal Government's strong dedication to ensuring the safety and protection of members of the Nigerian Armed Forces as they carry out their legal responsibilities.
He warned against any behaviors that might weaken the authority, expertise, or respect associated with uniformed staff while they perform their duties.
This remark came after a widely shared video depicted the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, verbally confronting a naval officer on duty at a contested property in Abuja.
In the meantime, speaking at a press briefing in Abuja to formally launch the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD), the Minister of Defence emphasized the government's commitment to safeguarding personnel carrying out valid duties.
He revealed the theme for the 2026 commemoration events as "Bravery, Loss, and Togetherness: Honoring Our Heroes," stating that it embodies the lasting qualities of bravery, love for country, and dedicated service that characterize the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Badaru highlighted that each officer who operates within legal boundaries and serves the country is entitled to complete institutional support against any form of harassment, threats, or damage.
He stated that the Nigerian Armed Forces and associated organizations function entirely within constitutional limits to ensure national security, peace, and stability.
"Police officers performing their legal duties embody the power of the Nigerian government and should be shown respect, provided with the required assistance to carry out their roles efficiently," he said.
He mentioned that the Ministry will keep enhancing internal systems to guarantee that officials stay disciplined, competent, and properly safeguarded while working for the country.
The Minister of Defence also urged public officials and citizens to work together with security forces, emphasizing that mutual respect, teamwork, and coordination among government bodies are essential for achieving long-term peace and national progress.
Badaru also stated that the Federal Government has launched a program named "Reclaiming the Ungoverned Space for Economic Benefits Programme (RUSEB-P)," aimed at sending retired but active military veterans to assist in securing and restoring regions once controlled by terrorists.
"By involving veterans to bolster local security and launch initiatives like agriculture and mining, RUSEB-P aims to stop the return of terrorism, revive local economies, and enhance national security and unity," he explained.
The Minister also introduced the "Thank A Soldier" QR Code, allowing Nigerians both within and outside the country to convey individualized expressions of gratitude to soldiers serving on the front lines.
During continuous military operations across the country, Badaru stated that during President Bola Tinubu's leadership, forces have neutralized over 13,000 terrorists and criminals, detained more than 17,000 suspects, freed almost 10,000 captives, and dismantled 1,900 unauthorized refining facilities.
He mentioned that more than 100,000 members of Boko Haram and ISWAP, including their families, had laid down arms and surrendered to Nigerian military forces.
In reference to the well-being of veterans, the Minister revealed that the Ministry was setting up a Veterans' Database and a Call Center, and had already registered 2,141 Civil War veterans who had previously not qualified for pension benefits.
He also mentioned that the government intends to revise the Nigerian Legion Act and rebrand it as the Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN), in order to more accurately represent its broader mission in assisting former service members.
