GACC Calls on Citizens to Fight Corruption

Bolgatanga, November 13, GNA – The Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC) is calling on people to reject all forms of corruption and inform anti-corruption bodies about such incidents for appropriate measures.
The Coalition, via Ms Dorcas Affum Tenkorang, its Assistant Programmes Officer, emphasized the importance of citizens resisting, rejecting, and promptly reporting instances of corruption for resolution.
"If you witness something, speak up. People should stand against, refuse, and inform about corruption. This is the sole method for Ghana to succeed in combating corruption," she stated.
Ms. Tenkorang shared her insights during an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) following a day-long discussion in Bolgatanga about the responsibilities of the Office of the Special Prosecutor, stating, "We aim to raise public understanding and recognition of the OSP."
The conference centered on the OSP's legal provisions and associated anti-corruption systems, which were included in the GACC's public awareness initiative under the project titled "Enhancing the rule of law and the battle against corruption."
The two-year initiative is supported by the European Union, Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs, and is being carried out in Ghana by GIZ in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.
It has been implemented in 60 districts throughout the country, with the benefiting districts in the Upper East Region being Nabdam, Bongo, Kassena-Nankana West Districts, Bolgatanga, and Kassena-Nankana Municipalities.
The conference provided attendees with a chance to get involved in continuous initiatives aimed at improving openness, responsibility, and public involvement in the battle against corruption.
The attendees comprised tribal chiefs, representatives from the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the National Commission for Civic Education, the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Ghana Federation of Disability Organisations, the Ghana Police Service, and other entities.
Ms. Tenkorang stated that the OSP is an autonomous and specialized entity established to assist Ghana in its battle against corruption, and that the forum aims to support the efforts of other anti-corruption organizations like CHRAJ, EOCO, and others.
We anticipate that the public will comprehend the role of the OSP, and also encourage more reports of corrupt activities. As part of this initiative, one of our goals is to improve the application of digital tools in reporting corruption.
"We aim to boost the number of individuals reporting corruption and enhance public confidence in these organizations. We also seek to remind citizens that they can report corrupt activities from the safety of their homes, without needing to visit these institutions," she stated.
Ms. Tenkorang mentioned that residents had the choice to disclose instances of corruption either anonymously or by providing their information, adding, “We believe that when people are aware of this, they will gain the confidence and bravery to report corruption without worrying about being threatened.”
Several individuals who contacted the GNA following the program praised the GACC and its supporters for launching an effort to involve the public in understanding the OSP's responsibilities.
Mr. Augustine Akugri, the Deputy Regional Director of the NCCE, who attended the meeting, stated that the battle against corruption could not be entrusted entirely to anti-corruption agencies and urged collective action.
