A blast on a railway line close to the village of Mika on Sunday evening caused damage to a section of the track used for delivering aid to Ukraine, according to senior officials in the Polish government, who described the event as an act of sabotage by Russian intelligence.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated on Tuesday that two Ukrainian individuals employed by Russia, who are recognized by Polish authorities, are suspected of detonating the railway line.

"All evidence suggests a Russian involvement," Tusk stated.

However, the European research, analytics, and advisory group Res Futura Data House examined thousands of online comments regarding the incident and discovered that 42% of the individuals who posted assigned responsibility to Ukrainians for the sabotage.

"The majority of comments indicate that individuals of Ukrainian background are responsible for the event," Res Futura stated in a message on X.

"Such signs are frequently rooted in past occurrences, like fires at locations in Poland, acts of vandalism, or the presence of Ukrainians near critical infrastructure," the organization added.

It is frequently suggested that these actions were meant as retaliation or provocation, supposedly to entice Poland into a direct confrontation with Russia.

Just 24% of the statements attributed the attack to Russians, whereas 19% of the comments held entities connected to the Polish government responsible.

As per Res Futura, the increase in these misleading statements could be connected to a reduction in the efficiency of the nation's Internal Security Agency (ABW).

While delivering the most recent updates to parliament, Tusk cautioned against the rise of anti-Ukrainian attitudes and false information on the internet.

"It is becoming increasingly simple to stir up anti-Ukrainian feelings for well-known reasons, as more and more Polish citizens are experiencing the strain of hosting such a significant number of refugees and migrants," he said.

From the perspective of Russian interests, the rise of intensely anti-Ukrainian sentiments, along with false information such as claims that Ukrainian drones are attacking Poland or that Ukrainians are sabotaging trains, holds dual significance for Russian intelligence agencies.

The leader of the government also mentioned that it serves Russia's advantage to split the Western alliance and redirect its focus away from Ukraine's requirements, a nation that is significantly more vulnerable without global backing.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski also shared a message on X, supporting Ukraine and emphasizing the advantages for Russia in disseminating false information and anti-Ukrainian stories in Poland.

"Some individuals, particularly on the right, have never truly embraced the Union, and it remains something 'other' to them," Sikorski wrote.

Individuals who accuse Ukraine of being responsible for Russia's actions in Poland are political saboteurs...Russia invests billions in promoting these sentiments, along with misinformation and propaganda.

"It aims to create division among public opinion against our neighbors, the EU, and Ukrainian refugees who have come to Poland fleeing Russian bombs," Sikorski concluded.

Even with pleas from those in authority, anti-Ukrainian material is becoming more common in the remarks of public individuals in Poland, attributing acts of sabotage and discord to Ukrainians and incorrectly implying that these serve the interests of the government in Kyiv.

The leader of the far-right Polish Crown Confederation party and MEP Grzegorz Braun described the explosion as "another anti-Polish provocation," stating that "warmongers are attempting to utilize it to heighten tensions" in a message on X.

Roman Fritz, the vice-president of the Polish Crown Confederation, stated on X that "the saboteurs have typically been Ukrainian citizens."

In the meantime, former Prime Minister Leszek Miller suggested on the internet that Ukrainian residents are frequently involved in acts of sabotage, stating, "no one has more hands-on experience in identifying, examining, and orchestrating explosions on railway tracks than Ukrainians."

Miller offered no examples to back up his statements.

The head of the far-right Confederation, which is currently Poland's third-largest political party, Sławomir Mentzen, connected Russian intelligence operations with the movement of Ukrainian citizens into Poland.

"They allowed a Ukrainian individual, who was previously convicted of sabotage in their country, to enter and who has now detonated tracks in Poland. We can't let everyone in. Poland needs to screen those wishing to come to us," he posted.

The Polish Ministry of Digitalisation cautioned on its website regarding false information about the rail explosion, and encouraged individuals to exercise greater care when encountering online reports, advising them to confirm the accuracy of the information.

"Disinformation efforts within the Russian and Polish information sphere have been detected since Sunday," the ministry stated.

"It aims to shift blame for the destruction of the Polish railway lines onto the Ukrainian side and to undermine the efforts of the Polish security services," it concluded.
