Namatai Kwekweza from Zimbabwe has been awarded the German Africa Prize 2025. This young advocate is receiving Germany's top recognition for Africa due to her "brave dedication" to upholding the rule of law and democracy in her native country.
The renowned German Africa Prize for this year has been given to democracy advocate Namatai Kwekweza of Zimbabwe.
A 26-year-old is being recognized by the German Africa Foundation for her steadfast dedication to the rule of law and democracy in her native country, as learned exclusively from the German Africa Foundation. okay1 serves as a media partner for the award.
The women's and youth activist delivers a "strong message of self-assurance and democratic revival," as stated by the 20-member independent panel. They chose Kwekweza from over two dozen candidates in the final stage.
At 18, Namatai Kwekweza established the WELEAD Trust, an entity dedicated to educating emerging leaders and encouraging their participation in political decision-making.
In the increasingly repressive climateIn Zimbabwe, she is advocating for the rule of law and political engagement. Kwekweza has taken significant risks in doing so:she has been arrestedMultiple times, and has reported instances of torture and harassment. Every success comes with a cost, states Kwekweza.
"At the conclusion of the day, we must make our difficult choices," Kwekweza said to okay1.
If you are taken against your will for expressing the truth to those in power, or if you are imprisoned for doing so, it's difficult. However, waking up each day and living a life that is merely a shadow of what it could be—restricted in opportunities and potential—is also challenging.
A figure from a new era
Getting the German Africa Prize was a surprise, the young activist acknowledged. She continued to explore the award's background.
"And when I had the chance to review previous winners of the award, which began in the '90s, I am amazed that I am among those listed," said Kwekweza.
This was also due to her community and the team at WELEAD Africa, Kwekweza mentioned. She expresses "deep gratitude" for receiving this award as a representative of the younger generation. "This award will play a key role in ensuring that our efforts receive much more attention," she said.
It marked a significant change in approach that also influenced the jury's choice, stated jury chair Claus Stäcker, Director Programs for Africa at okay1.
"Across the continent, young individuals are advocating for a voice in decision-making processes, transparency, and societal transformation, as highlighted by the protest movements led by Generation Z in nations such as Kenya, Madagascar, Tanzania, and Cameroon," Stäcker stated.
For the jury, Namatai Kwekweza represents a key illustration of not just dissent, but of a "new wave of democrats, boldly assuming accountability and contributing to the development of their nations."
The award is considered the most prestigious German honor for outstanding Africans. It is presented by the German Africa Foundation — a nonpartisan organization dedicated to fostering a more detailed perception of Africa within political circles and among the German population.
Since 1993, it has recognized people from Africa who have provided outstanding support to democracy, peace, human rights, sustainable development, research, art, culture, or social matters in Africa.
Last year, the Mayor of the capital city of Sierra Leone, Freetown,Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, was awarded the honor. Other recipients include researchers studying COVID.Tulio de Oliveira and Sikhulile Moyo, former President of Botswana Ketumile Masire and Somali activists Waris Dirie andIlwad Elman.
