The National Working Committee (NWC) and the 2025 National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated yesterday that the party's planned national convention will take place as scheduled this weekend.
In a statement from Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP National Publicity Secretary and member of the Publicity and Communication Sub-Committee (NCOC), the party confirmed to all members and the public that its 2025 National Convention would proceed as planned, taking place on Saturday, 15th and Sunday, 16th November, in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
Ologunagba stated that the NWC and NCOC called on party members and Nigerians at large to ignore false statements being spread by certain individuals, who are reportedly hired by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in a failed effort to prevent the PDP national convention.
Ologunagba said, "We know about the schemes by the APC to disrupt the opposition and establish a single-party system in the nation, a plan that will be legally opposed."
The NCOC and the party will keep working diligently all day and night to guarantee a successful National Convention in Ibadan as planned.
Expressing gratitude to Nigerians for their strong backing of our party, the NCOC extends a warm welcome to all delegates, party leaders, officials, and supporters of the PDP, who have begun arriving in Ibadan for the National Convention.
Nevertheless, Ayo Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti State, mentioned that the turmoil affecting the PDP can only be fixed by tackling its leadership shortcomings, noting that the party has deteriorated from the top.
However, Eddy Olafeso, the former National Vice Chairman of PDP, claimed that those who oppose the party's national convention are attempting to create a one-party system in Nigeria.
Fayose, who addressed a TV show, claimed the opposition party was "rotting from the top."
He stated, "When a fish rots from the body, it can be saved, but when it rots from the head, it cannot be saved. At present, the PDP has rotted from the head."
Fayose stated that he had been candid regarding the party's internal problems and had consistently cautioned that the PDP was facing difficulties.
He said, "I haven't come here for a single day to mislead Nigerians regarding the PDP, and I've never concealed the truth that I will never abandon the PDP."
I have also not concealed the fact that I strongly support the president, being a Yoruba man. I am open to correction, and I have repeatedly stated that PDP is facing difficulties.
Fayose mentioned that he had earlier foreseen that three PDP governors would switch sides, noting that his prediction has already come true.
He stated, "Following my visit here three weeks ago, Governor Diri departed. He was originally the head of the (PDP) campaign screening committee, but he left. The governor of Enugu also left. The third one is the governor of Taraba, who was transferred by the president to the national chairman of the APC."
Fayose mentioned that another governor was set to depart from the PDP, stating that further resignations are expected.
As per his statement, "Another individual will depart soon. The Governor of Plateau will be leaving. However, I am telling you once more, following the governor of Plateau, another governor will step down. When I return here, I will bring it up again."
Nevertheless, Olafeso, who joined Fayose during the show, criticized those opposing the party's national convention, claiming they aim to create a one-party system.
Responding to the Federal High Court's directive halting the PDP's national convention set for November 15 to 16 in Ibadan, Olafeso called the ruling "the peak of judicial misconduct."
He said, "The injunction issued by the Federal High Court today preventing our planned convention did not surprise us."
A group is determined to completely dismantle the party, but we will not let that happen. Good will triumph over evil.
Olafeso stated that the party will not be discouraged by the decision, showing confidence that the convention would proceed as planned.
"We will not permit this. I am motivated, like many of our peers, that this cannot be allowed. Truth and justice need to triumph," he said.
