PDP Bot Urges Ibadan Convention to Proceed Saturday
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) asserts that the national convention scheduled for Saturday in Ibadan must take place.
The head of the BoT, Sen. Adolphus Wabara, made this statement upon receiving the report from the Reconciliation Committee in Abuja on Thursday.
He mentioned that regardless of the internal crisis and legal issues the party is dealing with, the convention should proceed in Ibadan as scheduled.
The committee, led by Hassan Adamu, was officially launched on November 5, tasked with examining matters that would help the party organize a free and effective national convention.
Wabara, during an interview with journalists following the release of the report, stated that all the party's branches had decided to proceed with the convention despite suggestions from some individuals that the party should form a temporary committee.
You are aware of the Governor's Forum, the National Working Committee (NWC), and the BoT. During our previous meeting, our statement referred to our intention to attend the convention.
But if, for some reason, the Court of Law reaches a different conclusion, as we are depending on the Supreme Court's ruling, which should have directed lower courts in making their decisions up to this point.
I mean, in a civilized world, these elements are intertwined and connected. However, regarding the party's organs, the convention will remain in effect.
"But, if we are halted by the courts, we are a law-abiding group; we have always been present, we will continue to arrive, and then we will likely follow the law, or the final directive, depending on the situation," he stated.
In response to worries that the BoT's involvement arrived too late, Wabara refuted that the situation would deteriorate, maintaining that "there is indeed no crisis."
He referred to the party's challenges as "self-created issues" fueled by "voluntary interests," implying that certain politicians are already thinking about 2031 and wish for the party to fade away now in order to be revived for their later benefit.
Wabara stated that the BoT began operating right after the 2023 elections but faced a shortage of necessary funding, which he claimed was not supplied by the individuals who were expected to provide it.
He emphasized once again the BoT's dedication to the continuation of PDP.
"I am not considering running for anything. Obviously, whatever choices the board makes during my tenure will be crucial in keeping the party going," he stated.
Delivering the results, Committee Chairman Adamu referred to the task as a "challenging responsibility" and expressed gratitude to the BoT for the chance.
"We have completed our rounds; we have engaged with different parts of our party, our leaders, the Governors' Forum, and other groups; we have now formulated our suggestions for a smooth convention," Adamu stated.
The Secretary of the Committee, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, during the presentation of the report, highlighted the main parties the committee engaged with throughout the week-long mission.
The parties involved, as he mentioned, consisted of the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, the National Working Committee (NWC) headed by Umar Damagum, the PDP Governors' Forum, and additional individuals.
Emerging from this, we have now chosen to meet with the other members who were suspended, mainly the National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, the National Organising Secretary, and the National Legal Adviser.
We met them at Anyanwu's location, and they spent time explaining things to us. They shared a lot, and we felt that our conversation with them was very beneficial.
We continued forward, and we felt we needed a comprehensive discussion.
"He mentioned that he met with the former Senate President, Sen. Bukola Saraki, and shared his personal views with the committee," he said.
Oghiadomhe, who observed that the committee had considered both advantages and disadvantages, stated that their suggestions were driven by their aim to provide a plan for sustainable and forward-thinking party management. (NAN)
