Penske IndyCar star Scott McLaughlinIt is becoming more and more probable that they will compete with the team's IMSA SportsCar Championship squad for the first time at the Daytona 24 Hours next January.

The addition of the seven-time IndyCar race champion to thePorsche Penske MotorsportThe driver lineup for the three-day IMSA pre-season Daytona test beginning on Friday has been referred to by team manager Jonathan Diuguid as a "first step" toward his aiming to race one of the factory 963 LMDhs in the 2026 season-opening event on January 24-25.

McLaughlin, who has participated in three Daytona events using LMP2 and GT Daytona Pro vehicles, has been selected to drive the two Porsche Penske Motorsport cars during the test, alongside another Penske IndyCar driver.Josef Newgarden, who was included in the lineup of the victorious PPM entry at Daytona in 2024.

"Josef clearly had significant success in the car, and I would say this is the first step in that direction [McLaughlin and Newgarden competing for Porsche at Daytona]," stated Diuguid, who is the managing director of PPM and president of Penske Racing since July.

That is likely the most accurate way to put it, yet we have not reached any conclusions.

Diuguid stated that Porsche and Penske are considering a return to having four drivers per car for Daytona, following their decision to reduce to three drivers during the defense of their title in the opening race of the season.

We've approached it in both ways and emerged victorious each time," he said. "The number of cars is quite high, making it mentally demanding.

From a physical standpoint, it's not really a problem, but this is likely the main feedback we've received from the drivers – that with so many cars on track and the constant traffic, it's much more mentally challenging than the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Two-time Indy 500 champion Newgarden joined PPM for the 2024 Daytona event as the fourth driver in the victorious #7 car, along with the team's full-season driversFelipe Nasr and Dane Cameron and endurance driver Matt Campbell.

Diuguid stated that no assumptions should be made about the lineup for this week's Daytona test in relation to PPM's IMSA permanent drivers for the upcoming year.

Felipe Nasr, Matt Campbell, andJulien Andlauerare the other three drivers mentioned in each of the PPM vehicles for the three-day test taking place on 14-16 November.

He mentioned that it was at least partially related to the availability of drivers, noting thatLaurens Vanthoorand Lauren Heinrich had a conflicting schedule at the FIA GT World Cup in Macau.

He mentioned that no additional announcements are anticipated until Porsche's customary Night of Champions event on November 29.

Porsche must reduce its LMDh team following the factory's exit from the Hypercar class in the World Endurance Championship.

This year, there were eight regular participants in the two 963 programs, whereas next year, only four full-time entries along with two additional part-time participants will be needed for Daytona, the Sebring 12 Hours, and the Petit Le Mans IMSA final at Road Atlanta.

Mathieu Jaminet, who secured the IMSA drivers' championship alongside Campbell, has already confirmed his exit from Porsche this year.

The French driver is set to join WEC debutant Genesis, the renowned brand from South Korean automaker Hyundai, occupying the position previously intended for Stoffel Vandoorne.

Vandoorne departed from Peugeot following the Fuji WEC event in October, but it was revealed thathe had returned to the French company earlier this month.
