Russian Drone and Missile Strike Hits Kyiv, Killing 4

Russia launched a significant missile and drone attack on Kyiv early Friday, resulting in four fatalities, fires, and scattered debris, with the sound of explosions echoing throughout the city, according to Ukrainian officials. A pregnant woman was among at least 34 individuals injured.
Emergency services arrived at several attack sites overnight, according to Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine stated that Russia deployed no fewer than 430 drones and 18 missiles in the assault.
Russia has conducted an air campaign against Ukraine since its full-scale invasion of the country almost four years ago. Diplomatic initiatives led by the United States this year aimed at halting the conflict have not yielded any results thus far.
The aerial attack on Friday, which also included strikes on Odesa in the south and Kharkiv in the northeast, primarily focused on Kyiv, where drones and missiles hit high-rise residential buildings, as stated by Zelenskyy.
It was 'a carefully planned strike aimed at inflicting maximum damage to individuals and civilians,' he stated in a Telegram message.
Moscow refutes allegations of attacking civilian zones, as the Russian Defense Ministry stated on Friday that it conducted an overnight strike against Ukraine's "military-industrial and energy infrastructure." Ukrainian authorities dismiss these statements, pointing to ongoing destruction of residences and public structures.
The assault marked the largest strike on Kyiv in nearly three weeks. The most recent Russian air attacks have targeted power infrastructure across the nation as the harsh winter season approaches.
Ukraine employed its U.S.-produced Patriot air defense systems to counter the assault, successfully downing 14 missiles, according to Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian president has urged international allies to provide additional advanced systems.
In the Odessa region, Russian drones targeted a bustling street in Chornomorsk, resulting in two fatalities and seven injuries, according to regional military administration head Oleh Kiper.
My hair was on fire
Residents of Kyiv described terrifying escapes and close calls during the dead of night.
Mariia Kalchenko stated that it was a miracle she lived through the attack on her building.
"I didn't catch any sounds, I only noticed that my hair was on fire," the 46-year-old volunteer dog handler for rescue operations said to The Associated Press.
She activated her flashlight and noticed that her dog had fled in fear. "I looked around and saw there was no wall, but instead there was a neighbor's apartment. The neighbor was shouting, there was no door, and the flames were spreading from the front door into the unit," she explained.
Oleh Hudyma, 59, mentioned that she learned about the attack and planned to head to a bomb shelter but was not fast enough.
I stood up, got dressed, went outside, and there was a blast. I couldn't hear the (drone) engine, only an explosion, fire, and everything was flying," she mentioned. "I was in the kitchen and simply collapsed to the ground."
Local officials cautioned that electricity and water disruptions could occur.
Eight of the city's ten districts experienced damage. Firefighters tackled blazes in residential buildings, with debris from explosions scattered throughout backyards and vehicles parked on the streets were set on fire.
In the broader Kyiv area, Russian attacks caused damage to essential infrastructure and residential buildings, resulting in at least one civilian being injured, according to Mykola Kalashnyk, head of the regional military administration. A 55-year-old man in Bila Tserkva sustained burns and was admitted to the hospital, he added. Fires erupted in private homes in the capital's outskirts.
The strike occurred as European Union representatives cautioned this week that Ukraine needs to maintain efforts against corruption after a significant corruption scandal has led to investigations of high-ranking nuclear energy officials. However, they also provided reassurance that aid will keep coming as Kyiv works to prevent Russia's invasion.
Russia claims it destroyed 216 Ukrainian drones
In reaction to Russia's ongoing attacks, Ukraine has deployed its own locally created drones and missiles against locations within Russian territory, particularly oil refineries and storage facilities that generate revenue for Moscow, as well as factories that equip the military.
The Russian Ministry of Defense stated on Friday that its air defense units destroyed 216 Ukrainian drones during the night across several Russian regions and the annexed Crimea. It did not refer to any missile attacks.
Nevertheless, Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine employed an upgraded version of locally manufactured Neptune missiles to attack locations far within Russia. The Russian Defense Ministry alleged that Ukraine targeted civilian infrastructure and stated that the overnight strike on Kyiv was a reaction to this.
More than 60 Ukrainian drones were shot down in the southern Krasnodar area, which is adjacent to Crimea, as reported by the Defense Ministry. In total, 45 drones were destroyed in the Saratov region further into Russia, with an additional 19 being downed over Crimea.
In Novorossiysk, a port city located in the Krasnodar region, an attack caused damage to an oil storage facility at the Sheskharis transshipment complex, along with unspecified "coastal structures," according to local officials. As reported by the independent news platform Meduza, Sheskharis is among the biggest oil loading centers for transferring oil and petroleum products in southern Russia.
A civilian ship in the port was also harmed by falling drone debris, with three crew members being taken to the hospital due to their injuries. Additionally, several residential structures were damaged, and a man from one of these buildings was hospitalized, according to officials.
In the Saratov region, Governor Roman Busargin stated that the attack caused unspecified damage to "civilian infrastructure." Unverified media reports indicated that an oil refinery may have been targeted.
