Mr. Kanu, who received a life sentence for terrorism at the Federal High Court in Abuja, has been undergoing trial since 2015 when he was initially detained by Nigerian authorities.
Inhabitants of Southeast have shown anger regarding the conviction and punishment of the head of the banned organization. Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, received a life sentence for terrorism.
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday found Mr Kanu guilty of all seven charges brought against him by the Nigerian government and latersentenced him to life imprisonment.
The legal accusations of terrorism directed at Mr. Kanu were connected to his campaign advocating for the separation of the South-east and certain areas of the South-south from Nigeria, aiming to establish an independent state known as Biafra.
The trial judge, James Omotosho, further directed that the IPOB leader be restricted from using mobile devices and broadcasting equipment, except when monitored by security personnel.
South-east residents fume
A person from Enugu State, Emeka Mamah, criticized the decision, stating that the matter should have been settled outside of court, similar to how the case of Sunday Adeyemo was managed.
Known as Sunday Igboho, Mr. Adeyemo is a proponent of the Yoruba Nation who was detained by Nigerian officials due to his activism and subsequently let go without undergoing a trial.
Mr. Mamah stated to PREMIUM TIMES that the situation involving Mr. Kanu was merely a "political prosecution," rather than a standard trial.
I'm unsure why Nnamdi Kanu's case was treated differently. It seemed as though the authorities had already decided to find him guilty," he stated, contending that the IPOB leader was merely an "activist.
He mentioned that should his conviction remain in place, it might pave the way for the rise of comparable activists in the Southeast, stemming from the claimed neglect of the area.
"This is due to the fact that as long as there is inequality, there will be protest. They (the Nigerian government) are not being fair to the South-east. And you can't expect people, particularly the youth, to remain silent," he stated.
For Chris Asor, a person living in Anambra State, the emotion resulting from the decision was one of frustration and resentment.
"The young man had spent a long time in prison, and there was an expectation that some leniency or exception should have been granted to him and the whole South-east," he said.
Mr. Asor, the head of Civil Society Organizations in Anambra State, stated that Nigeria failed to address the Biafran movement and mend the scars from the civil war.
The perspective of many people from Southeast, particularly in Ndigbo, is that the civil war is still ongoing. It remains unresolved.
"If Nnamdi Kanu remains imprisoned and faces a life sentence, they (the Nigerian authorities) are not genuinely committed to addressing the scars of the civil war," he said.
Meshack Nwachukwu, from Ebonyi State, expressed that the conviction and punishment of Mr. Kanu were frustrating and disheartening.
"It felt like a dream to me. Ever since I found out about it yesterday, I haven't been the same. I was extremely upset," he said regarding the verdict.
Mr. Nwachukwu, based in Abakaliki, the capital of Ebonyi State, informed PREMIUM TIMES that tensions escalated following Mr. Kanu's conviction on Thursday.
He claimed the decision was incorrect and questioned why leaders in the Southeast stayed silent about it.
The inhabitant mentioned that the ruling might increase instability in the Southeast.
"According to this decision, no one is safe anymore (in the Southeast). This marks the start of instability that we have been working to prevent," he said.
In Imo State, Benjamin Ohadoma stated that the sentencing of the IPOB leader was "extremely unjust."
Mr. Ohadoma feels that the decision did not reflect fairness in the case.
We are furious. To be honest, when I learned about the conviction, I became angry.
"Although I was unable to take any action to alter the circumstances, I believe the ruling indicates that an ordinary citizen cannot attain justice within Nigeria's judicial system," he stated, maintaining that the decision had been prearranged.
IPOB kicks
The banned pro-Biafra organization, IPOB, has criticized the conviction and life sentence imposed on its leader, Mr. Kanu.
In a statement released on Friday, IPOB representative Emma Powerful asserted that Mr. Kanu has not committed any offense recognized under Nigerian law.
To clarify, no firearm, no grenade, no general-purpose machine gun, no explosive material, and no attack strategy were ever discovered on Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. None.
"No witness, whether civilian or military, has ever provided testimony in any court—during any phase—that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu committed any crime recognized under Nigerian or international law. This is an undeniable truth," he stated.
Mr. Powerful asserted, without proof, that the Nigerian government has consistently treated self-determination as a crime, even though it is protected by both local and international laws.
The representative highlighted the irony that Nigerian officials were intent on prosecuting Mr. Kanu, yet took no similar action against certain security forces who had stormed and assaulted the residence of the IPOB leader's family in Afara-Ukwu, Abia State, in 2017.
"No government official or military personnel has faced consequences for these crimes. However, the same system is now attempting to prosecute the victim," he stated.
Referencing Section 36(12) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution, as updated, Mr. Powerful stated that the judge issued the verdict without presenting the legal basis for the IPOB leader's conviction.

"IPOB will keep working with international organizations to make sure that this recent legal nonsense receives the criticism it deserves," he stated.
In the meantime, PREMIUM TIMES states that Justice Omotosho, while addressing Mr Kanu's argument regarding the law under which he was being prosecuted, pointed out that the IPOB leader faced charges for actions taken between 2018 and 2021, whereas the new Terrorism Prevention Act 2022 came into effect in May 2022.
The judge also referred to Section 98 (3) of the new legislation, which states that any ongoing proceedings, prosecutions, interests, judgments, charges, or actions that were initiated before the implementation of the new law can be carried forward and maintained.
