SSCE Certificates Presented to Inmates at Ekiti Correctional Centre

The Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State-based Medium Correctional Centre recently organized an event to award certificates to prisoners who took part in the 2024 National Examination Council (NECO) Senior Secondary Certificate Examination.
The first event was held at the detention center in Ado-Ekiti, the state's capital. Prisoners displayed a range of handmade products, such as bags, hand fans, wallets, garments, and soaps, for visitors and interested parties.
Participants comprised NECO officials, delegates from the Ministry of Women's Affairs, security organizations, along with traditional and religious figures.
Oluremi Okuseinde, the Corrections Controller in the state, stated that displaying school certificates and exhibiting the inmates' handmade items demonstrated the center's dedication to rehabilitating and reforming prisoners so they can make beneficial contributions to society upon their release.
She voiced her approval of the exceptional results achieved by the prisoners in the test and praised the NECO administration for granting the center permission to participate in 2022.
Okuseinde highlighted that these initiatives correspond to the revitalized hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu, backed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, and the Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, meeting the requirements in line with international standards.
She requested the backing of all interested parties in establishing a study center for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) within the facility, "which will allow them to continue their education while and even after being released from detention."
As she stated, "Following the renaming of the Nigerian Correctional Service (previously known as the Nigerian Prison Service) and the addition of the Non-Custodial Service, its function has moved beyond simply holding inmates and traditional punishment to embracing a correctional approach based on education, vocational training, and recreational activities aimed at effectively reforming and rehabilitating prisoners for successful reintegration into society after release."
In speaking, the Assistant Controller of Corrections, Olutope Amele, emphasized the correctional center's dedication to transforming the stories of inmates by providing them with vocational training and education that will enable them to contribute positively to society upon their release.
He urged members of the public, particularly non-governmental organizations, to assist the prisoners by providing vocational tools and resources at the facility that would aid in their development.
"We remain committed to our mission of rehabilitating and reintegrating prisoners so they can benefit themselves and contribute to society, and we are urging support from the local community in terms of education and vocational training for their progress," Amele stated.
From her side, the Deputy Superintendent of Correctional Services, Esther Aremu, emphasized the importance of altering public views on prisoners, pointing out that many have acquired appropriate vocational training and education to contribute positively to the broader community after release.
The spokesperson for the President's Special Advisor on Women's Issues, Maryam Abdullahi, praised the correctional center's administration for its effects on the prisoners, and pledged to increase the call for a NOUN center within the institution.
