Certain accusations may persist throughout the lives of those they concern unless thoroughly dealt with.

A few days back, a disagreeable event unfolded in Media General's TV3 studio as two scholars engaged in a heated debate.

The conflict has led to ongoing public discussions in the town. The two individuals at the center of the controversy are academics who have educated numerous students over the years. These students should feel embarrassed by the events, particularly the resurgence of the sex-for-grades accusations, which have once again become a major topic in public conversation after a period of silence.

The two exchanged harsh words, and ultimately one of them became too explicit in his verbal assault, prompting his opponent, Prof. Ransford Gyampo, to threaten legal action.

Several people found themselves remembering the consequences of the BBC Eye documentary on sex-for-grade allegations after the episode aired and the resulting controversy.

It was a highly embarrassing documentary that damaged the reputation of Ghana's outstanding academic standing. Many people, including us, at that time, called for the truth about what actually occurred.

Did Professor Gyampo receive a full acquittal after the committee investigated the accusation? This is what has drawn the interest of many who have displayed excessive curiosity about the issue since the recent studio altercation.

We question whether it would be in the best interest of Prof. and the University of Ghana to establish a new investigation with an expanded scope, allowing this issue to be resolved definitively, particularly as some former female students allege they were victims of 'violent kisses.'

It is worth noting that the leading university correctly appointed a six-member investigative committee, chaired by Justice Vida Akoto Bamfo, a former Supreme Court judge, to examine the BBC documentary.

The presentation by Prof. Gyampo, where he openly requested sexual favors in exchange for grades, which was the main focus of the documentary, was dismissed by the committee. Certain parts of the institution's policy on sexual harassment could not be applied in this situation to the BBC's undercover female reporter, as she was not a student of the institution.

For some, this is considered a vindication, but for others, because specific actions were directed at Prof. Gyampo, a full exoneration was not possible.

This perspective argues that because certain consequences were imposed on Prof. Gyampo, he could not be completely cleared of wrongdoing.

For example, he was suspended for six months without pay and was required to attend mandatory counseling related to sexual misconduct, as well as be placed under a set period of supervision.

It is advisable for the University of Ghana to make a statement regarding the matter or perhaps re-examine the issue via an inquiry committee with expanded mandates. There needs to be an end to the commotion. The US Epstein case serves as an example.
