UKGCC Reveals Winners of UK-Funded Grand Challenge Pitch Event

The UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC) has revealed the victors of its Grand Challenge Pitch competition: Kodu Technology Limited, Delimush, Agri Mercab, and Wobil Technologies. The event was supported by the UK government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), as part of its West African innovation initiative, Sankore.
The Grand Challenge is a competitive program aimed at discovering and backing promising agricultural innovations, helping them grow. This initiative, part of the Sankore Programme, is focused on enhancing West Africa's innovation environment and expanding effective solutions throughout the region. The chosen innovations will now get assistance with commercialization to aid in growing their businesses as the next stage of the initiative starts.
Of the 70 candidates, 30 creators were selected, and 12 competitors were asked to present their ideas to a group of financiers, specialists, and project collaborators.
Commenting on the process, Shirgade Laryea, Senior Trade Services Manager at the UKGCC, stated: “During the Programme, the UKGCC and its partners – FCDO, Results for Development (R4D), and Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST) worked to enhance Ghana-UK collaborations in science, technology, and innovation, while gaining a better insight into the needs of innovators and the obstacles they encounter.”
In preparation for the event, the UKGCC, along with its collaborators—FCDO, Results for Development (R4D), and Ghana's Ministry of Environment, Science, and Technology (MEST)—organized innovation workshops and masterclasses in Accra and Kumasi during March 2025. More than 250 innovators participated in sessions focused on commercialization, investor preparedness, and intellectual property.
The four winning innovations
The shortlisted candidates were evaluated according to their market preparedness, demonstration of concept, capacity for generating income, influence, and compatibility with governmental systems that facilitate expansion. Ratings were confirmed by the Sankore Team, FCDO, representatives from the private sector, and the innovators themselves.
The four winners are:
- Kodu Technology Limited –An agricultural enterprise focused on social change, manufacturing cost-effective, environmentally conscious menstrual products derived from plantain and banana stalks.
- Delimush –A company pioneering food technology that transforms perishable produce such as mushrooms and tomatoes into chemical-free, long-lasting foods with a shelf life of up to two years.
- Agri Mercab –A company specializing in waste management that transforms organic waste into useful products via community-driven black soldier fly (BSF) operations.
- Wobil Technologies –An agricultural technology company that minimizes post-harvest losses through climate-friendly, locally produced farming equipment secured the top four innovations.
Dorcas Amoah Lartey, a Marketing Strategist and Customer Experience lover, shared her experience as a judge as both motivating and optimistic. “It was enlightening to witness the amount of creativity emerging from Ghana's youth. It's uplifting to see young individuals creating solutions for the agricultural industry. Regardless of whether they won or not, I encourage all participants to use the feedback they obtained and continue improving their concepts. Each one of them has a promising future.”
Support for winners
As part of a set of commercialization support services, the winners will get strategic advice and personalized help to enhance their market preparedness and growth potential. They will also gain from training and mentorship initiatives provided by UKGCC and its affiliated partners.
As the Sankore project enters its next stage, the UKGCC and its collaborators continue to focus on encouraging creativity and promoting cooperation between Ghana and the UK. By aiding these exceptional innovators in expanding their ideas, the initiative keeps enhancing the innovation environment in West Africa and promoting long-term development within the agricultural industry.
