Italian defense minister states that any stance other than ongoing support for Ukraine would be 'illogical'
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated on Friday that it would be "illogical" for Italy to stop providing military and civilian assistance to Ukraine.
Crosetto commented following a gathering of the European Group of Five (E5) in Berlin, where he met with officials from Germany, France, Poland, and the UK, along with the EU's foreign policy representative and the Ukrainian defense minister.
"It seems ridiculous to me not to keep doing this, and in fact to expand, using all our resources, the support we provide to a country that is only defending itself against an illogical and confusing attack," Crosetto stated.
He mentioned that he had already approved the 12th package of assistance for Kyiv and that Italy is set to support Ukraine's power supply during the winter by providing electrical generators.
His remarks followed an earlier statement this month by Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who claimed that Rome could not keep providing funds and arms "for another 50 years."
Salvini is part of the coalition with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, who has strongly backed Ukraine.
Russia states it has no intentions of attacking NATO following remarks from a German general
The Russian Foreign Ministry has rejected statements by German Lieutenant General Alexander Sollfrank, which it labeled as alarmist, regarding Moscow's ability to strike NATO countries.
Sollfrank mentioned to Reuters news agency earlier this month that Russia possesses the "current capabilities and combat strength" to "initiate a limited attack against NATO territory as early as tomorrow," although this would rely on the stance taken by Western allies.
On Friday, Maria Zakharova, a representative from the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that there are "no intentions to strike NATO member states."
"Nevertheless, Russia is already implementing all the required steps to maintain security while the alliance is increasing its military presence close to Russian borders," she mentioned, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.
Zakharova referred to the statements as part of "a coordinated effort to brainwash their own citizens, instill fear, and familiarize people with the notion that a confrontation with Russia is unavoidable, aiming to validate their own errors, missteps, and even wrongdoing."
Germany's Pistorius criticizes Russia's 'disrespect' following a significant assault
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that a significant Russian assault on Ukraine during the night breached international law and highlighted Moscow's "disregard for human life."
Russian drones and missiles targeted residential areas along with Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.
"It is clearly apparent that Putin's goal is to make winter as difficult as possible for Ukraine, aiming to undermine morale and weaken the Ukrainian people's resistance," Pistorius stated following a meeting with European counterparts, including Ukrainian Defense Minister Denis Shmyhal.
He is not achieving success in this.
The defense minister further stated that Germany has committed an additional €150 million ($175 million) to support the acquisition of American weapons for Ukraine through the PURL (Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List) system.
The PURL system emerged due to the Trump administration's unwillingness to finance its own military supplies for Ukraine. As a result, other NATO countries have chosen to purchase specific weapons they are unable to manufacture domestically from the US and then supply them to Ukraine.

430 drones, 18 missiles involved in assault on Kyiv — Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated on Friday that approximately 430 drones and 18 missiles were involved in the lethal Russian assault on Kyiv during the night.
He characterized the assault as a "premeditated" act, intended to inflict "the greatest possible damage to individuals and civilian facilities."
"The primary objective of the attack was Kyiv, with additional strikes also affecting the Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odesa regions," the Ukrainian leader stated on the social media platform X.
Four individuals lost their lives in the assault, with multiple others — among them children and a pregnant woman — sustaining injuries, he mentioned.
Zelenskyy mentioned that many apartment complexes were harmed in the attacks, and rescue teams have been operating in the affected zones throughout the night.
Shrapnel from an Iskander missile struck the Azerbaijani Embassy, he mentioned.
Zelenskyy mentioned that Russia deployed a Zircon missile in the Sumy area on Friday morning.
Ukrainian President called for penalties against Russia after the most recent Russian attacks.
"Russia continues to sell oil and implement its plans. All of this needs to stop," he stated.
He mentioned that Europe and the United States can support Ukraine in enhancing its air defense capabilities, such as providing further systems and interceptor missiles.
"Real decisions are what we are relying on," Zelenskyy emphasized in his statement.
VIEW — Women play vital roles during the Ukraine conflict
The conflict in Ukraine has resulted in critical positions remaining unfilled, with hundreds of thousands of men having joined the military.
More women are entering positions that were previously held mainly by men — such as in emergency services like firefighting.
Russia claims it has destroyed more than 200 Ukrainian drones
Russia stated that its air defense systems destroyed or captured over 200 Ukrainian drones during the night.
"Over the past night, air-defense systems shot down and destroyed 216 Ukrainian drones," stated the Russian Defense Ministry on Telegram.
The ministry stated that 66 drones were shot down in Russia's southern Krasnodar area, where officials previously mentioned an oil storage facility and harbor had been attacked.
A total of 45 Ukrainian drones were also shot down in Saratov, according to Moscow.
Ukrainian reporters talk about ways to sustain independent journalism
The availability of trustworthy information has become a critical area of contention since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Independent media play a crucial part in the front lines, fighting against false information, protecting democratic values, and ensuring the public is well-informed as the nation moves forward with its path toward joining the European Union.
At a recent okay1Akademie event this week, ten Ukrainian journalists showcased their work to a group of European policymakers and media professionals.

Ukrainian drones strike Novorossiysk port in Russia
A Ukrainian drone attack reportedly caused damage to a ship, multiple apartment complexes, and an oil facility in the Russian Black Sea port of Novorussiysk early Friday morning, according to local authorities.
The operational headquarters of Russia's southern Krasnodar area reported that three injured crew members were transported from the vessel to a hospital for medical care.
Ukrainian authorities did not promptly respond to the assault.
Although Ukraine does not possess a large navy, it has managed to achieve some level of effectiveness in the Black Sea since the conflict began, employing aerial and underwater drones to push Russia's Black Sea Fleet into eastern harbors like Novorussiysk.
"Large" overnight assault on Kyiv
The capital of Ukraine, Kyiv, faced "massive" Russian air attacks during the early hours of Friday morning. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that four individuals lost their lives and multiple others were wounded in the assault.
Structures suffered harm across "nearly all neighborhoods."
Kyiv's mayor, Vitaly Klitschko, stated that air defense forces were active in countering a "large-scale enemy attack," although he mentioned that "parts of the heating systems were damaged." He also cautioned that power and water supplies might be affected.
The Russians are targeting residential structures," said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city's military administration. "Numerous high-rise buildings have been damaged across Kyiv, almost in every neighborhood.
The governor of the Kyiv region, outside the capital, stated that drone and missile attacks resulted in one person being injured and fires breaking out in multiple areas. A 55-year-old man in Bila Tserkva city sustained heat burns and was taken to the hospital.
The Ukrainian air force stated that Russia was also attacking multiple additional areas using drones and precision-guided bombs.
