An American worker was shot dead at a beach bar in the Bahamas when he allegedly got into a fight with a senior police officer, the Daily Mail can exclusively reveal.

Lineman Cody Castillo, 31, is alleged to have climbed into his work truck and driven toward the off-duty superintendent when the bust-up spilled into the street Saturday night.

Authorities in Nassau say the top cop 'feared for his life' and responded to the threat by drawing his service pistol and firing a single fatal shot.

Cody, originally from Huntsville, Texas, was working in the Bahamas for energy firm Pike Electric, according to his grieving family.

He and his wife Makayla, 29, married a year ago and were expecting their first child – a baby boy - in August.

He was due to fly back to their Crawfordville, Florida home this week to celebrate his wedding anniversary, according to a close friend.

'Cody's family is in complete shock that he would ever be the victim of something like this. It's just so hard to believe,' the friend told the Daily Mail.

'He was a hard-working family man, a devoted husband, and he was so excited to become a father.

'He wasn't an angry person, he was kind, gentle, and the type of person who would never hurt anyone.

'Truly one of the best people you could know.'

The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) announced an investigation into the 'fatal police-involved shooting' at 6pm on Saturday.

The force did not name the officer or reveal his rank, nor did it say whether he was taken off active duty.

Sources told the Daily Mail the cop involved is a superintendent and second-in-command at a neighborhood police station.

The dust-up took place outside Da Plantation Bar and Grill, a bustling hangout for locals and tourists alike close to the popular Cable Beach area.

'Preliminary reports indicate that shortly before 6pm an off-duty police officer was present at the establishment when an altercation began inside and subsequently continued outside,' the RBPF said in a statement.

'During the incident, one of the individuals entered a vehicle and allegedly drove it in a threatening manner toward the officer.

'Fearing for his life, the officer drew his service weapon and fired a single shot at the driver, who sustained fatal injuries.'

Cody and Makayla fell in love five years ago while he was working on a powerline project in Tallahassee, Florida and became a regular patron at the sports bar where she worked.

They set up home with their two dogs in nearby Crawfordville and got married on March 20 last year.

Makayla recently went back to school to qualify as a registered nurse.

'Makayla and Cody's love story was just beginning,' a friend wrote on a GoFundMe page that has raised over $20,000.

'They married a year ago, and their hearts were full of hope as they prepared to welcome their first child - a baby boy due in August.

'Cody was working to support his family with PIKE Electric in the Bahamas. Then, in a moment that changed everything, Cody's life was taken by senseless violence while he was working abroad.'

'Makayla is now facing the unimaginable: grieving her husband while preparing to bring their son into the world alone.

'She's overwhelmed by the sudden loss, the weight of funeral expenses and the uncertainty of how she'll manage living costs and care for her baby without Cody by her side.'

'The pain and fear are real, and she needs help from anyone who can offer it.'

The Daily Mail has reached out to the RBPF for more information.
