The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, on Monday charged newly promoted senior police officers not to see their elevation as a reward, but rather as a call to greater responsibility that places them under scrutiny and demands a higher standard of leadership, judgment, and conduct.
Speaking at the decoration ceremony of newly promoted senior officers to the ranks of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) and Commissioners of Police (CPs), held in Abuja, IGP Disu pointed out that the promotion was a deliberate, merit-based step aimed at strengthening professionalism, competence, and integrity within the Nigeria Police Force.
According to him, “Let me state clearly, this promotion is not a reward; it is a responsibility. It places you under greater scrutiny and demands a higher standard of leadership, judgment, and conduct.
“From this moment, you are no longer just senior officers; you are strategic leaders of this institution. You are expected to lead from the front. Your actions, decisions, and personal conduct must reflect discipline, integrity, and absolute respect for the rule of law.”
He warned that under his leadership, “there will be zero tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, or dereliction of duty,” urging that they must take full responsibility for the conduct of their personnel.
According to him, “Supervision must be firm, consistent, and effective. You must know what is happening within your commands at all times. Lack of supervision breeds misconduct; strong leadership enforces standards. I will hold you accountable for both operational outcomes and the behaviour of officers under your authority.”
The IGP, who emphasised that the Nigeria Police Force under his leadership is firmly committed to people-oriented policing, declared that, “this is not optional; it is a core operational principle.
According to him, “You must ensure that policing in your jurisdiction is driven by professionalism, respect for human rights, and responsiveness to the public’s needs.

“Our officers must be visible, approachable, and accountable. The era of policing that alienates the people is over. We must build trust deliberately and consistently. Intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and effective law enforcement are all strengthened when the public has confidence in us.
“You are also to drive reform within your areas of responsibility. Embrace innovation, strengthen operational efficiency, and eliminate outdated practices that do not align with modern policing standards. We must evolve as a Force operationally, technologically, and ethically.”
As part of the Force’s reform agenda, IGP Disu directed the newly promoted officers to embrace innovation, strengthen operational efficiency, and eliminate outdated practices that do not align with modern policing standards.
In furtherance of this reform drive, the IGP announced that all newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs) and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) would proceed on a strategic leadership retreat beginning Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
He said the retreat, organised by the Police Reform Secretariat in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), was designed to deepen ongoing reforms with a focus on transformational leadership, professionalism, and modern policing standards.
He added that participation in the retreat was mandatory and expected all concerned officers to fully commit to the exercise, which he said would provide a platform for critical reflection, strategic alignment, and capacity building for sustainable reforms across the Force.
On upcoming institutional activities, he stated that the Nigeria Police Force would host the 2nd edition of National Police Day on April 7, 2026, as part of efforts to strengthen institutional visibility, deepen community engagement, and reinforce public trust.
He disclosed that a week-long line-up of activities would begin on Monday, March 30, 2026, across all commands and formations, featuring medical outreach programmes, community engagement initiatives, and other interventions aimed at bringing policing closer to the people.
According to him, the celebrations will culminate in a grand parade, as well as a gala night and award ceremony on April 7, where outstanding officers will be recognised for excellence in service.
The IGP directed all commands to ensure active participation and to execute the activities with the highest level of professionalism and visibility.
He also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support in strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture, saying that this had been critical to ongoing police reform efforts.
He equally commended the Police Service Commission for its professionalism and transparency in the promotion process, noting that its role remains vital in sustaining fairness and credibility within the system.
The newly decorated AIGs include Emmanuel Ado Christopher, former Commissioner of Police in Yobe State; Joseph Eribo, former CP Ekiti State; Dantawaye Miller, former CP Federal Capital Territory; and Uche Ifeanyi Henry, PhD, Director of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre.
Others are Olarenwaju Peter Ogunlowo, former CP Ogun State; Muhammad Dahiru, former CP Jigawa State; Dankombo Morris, former CP Adamawa State; Bello Shehu, former CP Katsina State; Ibrahim B. Maikaba, former CP Zamfara State; Ahmed Musa, former CP Sokoto State; Olohundare Moshood Jimoh, former CP Lagos State; Simeon Udofia Akpanudom, former CP Anti-Fraud, FCID Annex Lagos; and Haruna Olufemi, former CP Oyo State.
